about

piano52project was started after the realization that I write a lot of music that ends up sitting in a drawer or as an unnamed file on my computer, never recorded, never shared.
I’ve begun it in order to discipline myself to write more and to experiment with different musical styles and compositional techniques.
Composers, writers, painters and the like often label themselves as ‘blocked’, meaning the ideas are not coming. In my experience I’ve found that this is often due to a lack of structure in regards to time, planning and habit, a trait of which I myself am guilty.
Constant creativity (whether the work is any good or not or whether it is shared with the world), has to become as essential to us as eating, breathing and sleeping if we wish to keep the flow of ideas coming. It encourages self-criticism and the courage to let go of ‘getting it right’ each time.
Most of all, it exercises the right brain, the creative side that looks at the whole picture first and breaks it down into smaller pieces. And that (as far as I believe), is what composition is. Taking a whole idea and vision and breaking it down into smaller pieces, much as a sculptor does when he creates a statue from a lump of stone - he chisels away until he finds the art beneath.

"My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us, the world is full of it and you simply take as much as you require."
- Sir Edward Elgar
